gre vocabulary

准备年底考gre,借个地方贴些单字以便随时可以上网温习。

abase oneself/sb lower oneself/sb in dignity; 屈辱自己(某人) N. abasement
Karen expected to have to curtsy to the King of Siam; when told to cast herself down on the ground before him, however, she refused to abase herself.

assurance 保证,担保,promise v. assure adj. assured
He gave me an assurance that it would be ready by Friday.
Despite repeated assurances he failed to repay the money he had borrowed.
I assure you they'll be perfectly safe with us.

censure sb (for sth) criticize sb severely; rebuke sb formally N censure
The senator was censured for behavior inappropriate to a member of Congress.
The judge censured the driver but didn't put him in jail.
The sleeping sentry received strong censure from his commanding officer.

curator manager in charge of a museum, an art gallery, etc
The members of the board of trustees of the museum expected the new curator to plan events and exhibitions that would make the museum more popular.

flippant not showing sufficient seriousness 轻率的,漫不经心的 N flippancy
When Jason told Lauretta he loved her, she dismissed his earnest declaration with a flippant "Oh, you say that to all the girls!"
His flippancy makes it diffcult to have a decent conversation with him.

illuminate brighten; make sth clear, understandable; enlighten.
Just as a lamp can illuminate a dark room, a perceptive comment can illuminate a knotty problem.
We were greatly illuminated by the discussion.
His reply was illuminating.

jaundice 嫉妒,怨恨,猜疑 adj. jaundiced
Do I detect a touch of jaundice in that remark?

After reading these stodgy philosophers, I find his pellucid style very enjoyable.

purport 大意,意图 v. claim
The purport of the statement is that the firm is bankrupt.
If the purport of your speech was to arouse the rabble, you succeeded admirably.
The document purports to be an official statement.

satiate provide (sb) with so much of sth that he wants no more.  N satiety.
The guests, having eaten until they were satiated, now listened inattentively to the speakers.
Having stuffed himself with goodies, Kenneth felt full to satiety.

swathe wrap sb/sth in several layers
They were swathed in scarves and sweaters.
When I visited him in the hospital, I found him swathed in bandages.

vigilant 警惕的,警觉的 N. vigilance
From the battlements, the vigilant sentry kept his eyes open for any sign of enemy troops approaching.
The cat watched the mouse-hole with vigilance.

abash v. embarrass 使不好意思
He was abashed at forgetting his wife's birthday.
The workman stood abashed as his mistakes were pointed out.

Thank you windrose!  Unfortunately, those are word lists, there's no sample sentences.  Besides, I'd like to do my own research on the meaning and usage of these words.

curmudgeon bad-tempered person (dated)

swelter suffer from the heat
I think they should turn down the heating a little bit, as we are sweltering in our winter clothes.
I am going to buy an air conditioning unit for my apartment as I do not intend to swelter through another hot and humid summer.

vigor physical strength or energy. adj. vigorous
At forty, he was in his prime and full of vigor.
A man's vigor lessens as he grows old.
Lester is over seventy years old,  I think he should avoid vigorous exercise or exertion.

abate  (使)减弱,消除
The ship waited till the storm abated before sailing out to sea.
The medicine abated his pain.
We must abate the smoke nuisance in our big cities.

astringent 收敛性之酸味;止血的 N. 止血药
The astringent quality of the unsweetened lemon juice made swallowing difficult.
Tannin is an astringent substance used in medicine.


centrifugal 离心的
Many automatic drying machines remove excess moisture from clothing by centrifugal force.

This is only a mirage; let us not be fooled by its illusive effect.
