Can GCC be upgraded?

The gcc on my system is 3.3.1

I found many new software cannot be installed to my system. And I haven't find a way to install the latest version gcc into my system. (My system is a redhat compatible distribution and cannot be upgrade)

Can anybody help me to resolve the problem. Thanks!

By switching to a distribution like Gentoo, all these problems will be solved very easily.

I did not switch to gentoo only because I need to use oracle.

Can I upgrade GCC like other software?

Are these software related to your gcc-3.3.1? The latest gcc-3.3.5 is merely bug fixed release of the 3.3 series, it won't change your current situation. The latest gcc-3.4.3 is even worst because the 3.4 series is known to have less compatibilities than 3.3!

You can install oracle in Gentoo: Gentoo下面安装Oracle10g
You can even use rpm in Gentoo.

Oh, thank you all for above replies. I shall study gentoo and lfs when I have time.

However basically I think gentoo is maybe too complex. I am a little familiar with debian, which is flexible than other distribution in my opinion, except for the installation of "heavy" softwares that has no deb package, like oracle.

Gentoo is not as complex as you may think, actually it's easier to configure and maintain than many other distros, for example, to upgrade gcc (suppose there's a new stable version of gcc just came out) is just a matter of typing a command like this:
# emerge sync && emerge gcc
On the other hand, I don't use Redhat, so I can't really help you much, sorry.
