slack crashes while switching between text mode and x, ibm t21, slack 12.0.0

Yesterday i installed slackware 12.0.0 on an old ibm t21 nb. i have lots of questions so far, but the most important one, i think, is why  the os crashes when:
startx and quit, and startx AGAIN.
startx and quit by pressing 'ctl-alt-backspace'
sometimes running 'sync; sync; init 0'

i use fvwm-2.4.20.
sorry i haven't installed any input method yet.

i'm a newbie, any suggestions will be helpful. thank you!

i used to have the same problem on my T22, and it was caused by incorect video card driver.
check out your video card type and config your xorg.conf
