把grub装在mbr的确切含义是什么？

一直不明白，我有两种可能的理解：
1.mbr比较小，所以只是个类似链接的东西，把grub装在mbr就是，让mbr指向了装在某个linux分区的grub程序。
2.grub程序就在mbr位置。
或者这两种情况都不是，希望高手赐教。

兄弟理解的比较对，MBR其实是硬盘0扇区的前446个字节，一个扇区一共是512个字节，前446个字节安装MBR，后面用64个字节放主分区表(4X16)。

我看了一下，stage1恰好是512字节，明白了。
