赫赫,I copy this note from usenet , a old yet active web service.
Basically you can see it as a BBS ,yet you can download and upload the posts by
software like OUTLOOK or thunderbird using RFC XXX protocol(a protocol simiar to POP ,any one can give the number ? ), aslo you can access it from http protocol (Web access), the largest usenet is
,as far as i known,
http://group.google.com

the usenet is well arranged in the form of regions seperated by dot such as
comp.os.unix.deve or comp.language.c
and maybe the difference between BBS and usenet is  , an usenet in you contury will deliver posts  from its server
to other server,when the topic is public and vice versa.  So the whole USENET can join all the post together ,like the union of BBS. But , most usenet in china can not deliver to and from
outside.
