关于xorg 完全删除， 还能工作的问题

我今天装了Ubuntu 7.10 AMD64
然后编辑了一下xorg.conf,我是按照我的gentoo的配置编辑的
编辑完了以后，x就变成800x600的分辨率了，所以我就用备份过得文件恢复
谁知道没有用。
怎么改都没有用。一气之下把/etc/X11，里面这个xorg.conf给删除了
这下好了，X又正常了。
怎么ubuntu删除了xorg.conf居然正常了。

请帮帮忙。解释一下，我想修复回正常。

因为现在的Xorg在自动配置方面增强了不少，所以，在没有xorg.conf的时候工作正常也是可以理解的事情。
