[HELP!]Can't activate Chinput

platform: Mandrake 9.0
chinput rpm from installation CD installed

i don't want to change the whole system to chinese
so i made .i18n in my home folder with the following lines:
LANG=zh_CN.GB18030
LC_MESSAGES=en_US
LC_TIME=en_US
But i couldn't get it out in X (Ctrl+Space)
i knew that i needed to add something in /etc/sysconfig/i18n
But KDE failed to load up after i added those "export" stuff in the file
i have spent hours trying to find any solutions in this forum and other sites, but i haven't found a clear instruction of how to configure i18n (or "locale
).
My questions are
1.Does the method i mentioned above only work with 9.1?
2. If yes, do i need to make other changes? if no, how would i configure locale correctly?

p.s.
it's been a busy day. i finally got the fonts and theme stuff set
now my desktop is even better looking than in windows:-)
